As a follow up to President Bush’s State of the Union speech, Under
Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property Jon Dudas
spoke
at UNC Charlotte on Friday, February 17, 2006, to recognize the innovations
fostered and partnerships developed with the greater Charlotte community and
the biotechnology community.
Under Secretary Dudas spoke on the need to innovate to
make health care more transparent, more accessible and more effective. He
also focused on UNC Charlotte’s integration of information technology with biology
in the Charlotte Research Institute’s bioinformatics program.

Charlotte has
one of the most active and robust Technology Transfer offices in the country
which has aided in 25 startup companies in the past decade. In that same
period, UNCC received 51 patents, and helped transfer 65 technologies to
industry, as well as create 80 new jobs. UNC Charlotte’s commitment to innovation and
collaboration with the private sector is exemplary,"
states David T. Sanders, U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office, U.S. Department of Commerce.
