The Bonnie
E. Cone Distinguished Professorship for Teaching*
was created in 1992 by the trustees of UNC Charlotte
upon recommendation of the Faculty Council to honor
superior career achievement in teaching. In
recognition of the high level of accomplishment
required of individuals named as Distinguished
Professors, it was decided that only five members of
the University faculty may hold this title at the same
time.
When
established the purpose of the program was to honor
persons who had established careers at UNC Charlotte.
They were to be tenured full professors, have been at
UNC Charlotte for five years, and have held their
current professorial rank for at least five years.
There was no time limit to the professorship.
The primary
commitment of UNC Charlotte to informed and effective
teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level has
not changed, but at this stage of maturation it seems
fitting to use the fifth slot for this award to
recognize a faculty
member who has exhibited excellent
teaching early in his or her career.
The Bonnie
E. Cone Early-Career Professorship in Teaching
is annually awarded to a member of the faculty who has been
awarded tenure within the last three years. The
appointment is for a three-year term,
and the announcement is made to the campus community
at the annual
University Convocation.
Dr. Matt Davies, Mechanical Engineering and
Engineering Science (2007); Dr. Ryan Kilmer,
Psychology (2008);
and Dr. Anabel Aliaga-Buchenau,
Languages and Culture Studies (2009) currently hold the professorship.
The
benefits and perquisites of the appointment will
include the inscription of the Professor’s name on a
permanent plaque, a position of honor at the first
Commencement of the Professor’s term, and the award of
University resources above that normally given to
faculty.
Nomination
packets should be forwarded by the Dean and include a
letter from the Department Chair or Dean that
documents how the faculty member has demonstrated a
commitment to teaching at the beginning of an academic
career. Specific examples should be included such as
innovative teaching techniques, curriculum
contributions, assessment of student learning, and
effective advising and mentoring. A copy of the
faculty member’s Teaching Philosophy that was included
in the Tenure Packet and current curriculum vitae also
should be included. To be eligible,
a faculty member must have been granted tenure in
2007, 2008, or 2009.
Nominations
will be due in the Provost’s
Office by
March
19, 2010, and may be sent via campus mail or
electronically to
AcademicAffairs@uncc.edu.
