NOBEL LAUREATE
HAROLD KROTO VISITS UNC CHARLOTTE
February
25, 2008
Kroto’s
1996 Nobel Prize for
Chemistry was based on his
co-discovery of buckminsterfullerene, a form of pure carbon
consisting of 60 carbon atoms arranged as a spheroid
reminiscent of geodesic domes designed by architect
Buckminster Fuller.
The discovery of these fullerenes led to the production of new
substances from these compounds, with new and unexpected
properties.
UNC Charlotte Charlotte Research Institute,
The Echo Foundation, and the
Duke Energy Special Initiatives Fund cosponsored
the
free, public event.
