MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE

The Master of Science in Architecture degree program provides an opportunity for the study of the cultural setting of architecture using the methodologies of analysis and design. The program includes concentrations in theory of design and theory of technology which share a sequence of core courses and parallel design studios and seminars. Designed primarily as a research degree for students who already have professional degrees in architecture and for students interested in research who have no intention of seeking a professional degree, the program is for full-time students who will work in collaboration and complete their studies during a period of approximately 12 months.

Degree Requirements. The curriculum comprises 44 credit hours to be completed during one academic year and the preceding and succeeding summer sessions. Students must complete a research project approved by the COA Graduate Committee. Full-time residency is required during study in the program; depending on the program theme, some off-campus field study may be required. Curriculum

Each year, the College will issue a Statement of Theme for the graduate program. This theme will be centered on an important issue of architectural theory and will serve as the vehicle for collaboration by the students and faculty in their research. Much of the coursework is specifically addressed to the theme for the particular year.

Transfer Credit. Because of the nature of the program, transfer credit will not normally be allowed. However, an exception may be made for graduate students who wish to pursue a specific academic offering at another institution as part of their research. The graduate committee can, in such a case, recommend the acceptance of transfer credit.
