MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE IN COUNSELING

The Counselor Education Program offers a program of study leading to the Master of Arts degree in school counseling, community counseling, and college student personnel. The school counseling track includes specializations in elementary and secondary school counseling; the college student personnel track prepares students to work in various areas of residence life in a campus setting. The counselor education program is administered by the Department of Human Services within the College of Education. It is designed to provide counselors with experience in counseling clients, both individually and in groups, on educational, career and life planning, social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and/or organizational concerns; consulting with other professionals concerning clients' needs; providing information to clients in the areas of educational, social, career and/or life planning; and conducting needs assessment, program design and evaluations.

Additional Requirements for Admission into Counselor Education. In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School, the following are required for graduate study in Counselor Education.

Admission decisions are made by a committee of program faculty. These decisions are based on the profile of the applicants and take into consideration each applicant's potential success in forming effective interpersonal relationships in individual and small group contexts; aptitude for graduate-level study; vocational goals and objectives; openness to self-examination; and personal and professional self-development. The applicants with the highest rankings are invited to a day-long interview process on campus. The number of applicants invited depends upon the number of openings in the program. Students who successfully complete the interview process are accepted as space is available.

Degree Requirements. The school counseling and community counseling tracks are 60 semester hour programs. These programs are developed to qualify the graduate to pursue licensure as a practicing counselor in North Carolina, national certification as a professional counselor from the National Board of Certified Counselors, and, for the school counseling track, advanced level licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The college student personnel track is a 48 hour program.
