INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Coordinator: Associate Professor West

American Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to develop in-depth knowledge of American society, past and present. Drawing its curriculum from approved classes in other departments and its own core courses, the program weaves traditionally divergent disciplines together so that students gain a broad understanding of American life and culture. The American Studies program is open to students of all majors. Students may complete the program by fulfilling requirements for the emphasis or the minor.

CONCENTRATION IN AMERICAN STUDIES

Students selecting the emphasis must complete 27 semester hours consisting of 9 hours of American Studies courses of which at least three hours must be in AMST 3100; three hours from the list of American- content multicultural courses; and 12 hours from American Studies or American-content courses from one of five approved areas: The South; Early America (to 1865); Modern America (1865-1965); Contemporary American Culture; or Multi-Cultural America. Students may select a maximum of six of these hours from one discipline. If students select the multicultural area as their specialty, they must select three hours from one of the other four areas. Students may find that some courses meet the requirements for both their major and the emphasis; however, a maximum of 9 hours of approved American-content courses from their major may be counted as part of the emphasis. All students must meet with the Coordinator prior to their senior year to outline the direc- tion of their program. They also must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 in classes applied toward the emphasis.

AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR

A minor in American Studies consists of 18 semester hours: six hours of American Studies courses including AMST 3100, and 12 semester hours of American Studies courses or approved American-content courses from other departments. A maximum of six of these hours may be in the student's major. All students must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 in courses applied to the minor.

COURSES APPROVED FOR THE EMPHASIS AND MINOR

The following courses have been approved for the American Studies emphasis and minor. Because additions and deletions are made to cor- respond to current University offerings, students are advised to consult with the Coordinator. Other classes that do not appear on the list, especially topics and independent study courses, may be approved if they are pertinent to the student's program and deal with an American topic. *Courses with an asterisk are especially recommended.
