
The Department of Art offers a diverse and comprehensive program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional degree, and a Bachelor of Arts, a liberal arts degree in art. The curriculum provides studio concentrations in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design and illustration, fibers, ceramics, and sculpture, in addition to a minor in art history and teacher certification in art.
Members of the studio faculty are well recognized professional artists, active in their fields of specialization. A diversity of viewpoints and educational training among faculty members encourages students to investigate and appreciate different forms of art expression.
The required study of art history offers a key to understanding the evolution of civilization and the development of human creativity. As a discipline, art history encourages appreciation of individual works of art and instills a vivid awareness of the social and historical context in which these works were produced.
The Art program addresses the needs of students working to become exhibiting artists, art teachers or scholars generally educated in the arts. It also prepares students for a wide range of career choices in art-related professions. The program is structured upon the following premises:

Concentrations may be earned in Art History, Painting, Fibers,
Drawing, Graphic Design/ Illustration, Photography, Ceramics,
Sculpture, Printmaking, or in a Cross-Disciplinary Concentration.
Concentrations for the BA degree require 12 semester hours; those
for the BFA degree require 18-36 semester hours. See departmental
advising sheets for details.
Students may receive a dual concentration by completing the concentration
requirements in two areas. This may require additional units for
the completion of graduation requirements.
Courses designated "for non-majors only" cannot be counted
toward the total numbers of units required for the major. Students
must receive a grade of C or better in all courses applied
to the major.
General Requirements. All students majoring in art are
required to complete courses which satisfy the six Goals
of UNC Charlotte Education listed earlier in this catalog.

Advisory System. Art students may select a Department academic
adviser in their area of concentration. In addition to meetings
required for preregistration, the student may ask the adviser
for any art program information. Advising sheets listing all curriculum
requirements are available in the Department office.
Teacher Certification. The department offers courses for
students seeking to meet the competencies for K-12 art teacher
certification and elementary teacher certification. Students planning
to specialize in art education should apply through the Coordinator
for Art Education during the first semester of the junior year.
A later decision to seek certification will result in delayed
graduation. Criteria for admission to the art education program
are:
Students who complete all the requirements for teacher certification
in art will be considered as having a completed second concentration
in the B.A. and B.F.A. programs in Art Education.
Requirements. Students seeking teacher certification in
art must complete requirements for the B.F.A. degree and in the
process must complete the following courses:

Note: Concentration requirements may include one course
from the media breadth. Some concentrations may require more units

Minor in History of Art
A minor in the History of Art consists of 24 semester hours, including
the same requirements as the B.A. degree concentration in History
of Art (information on the History of Art Concentration can be
found in the Department office). The student must achieve a GPA
of 2.5 or above in the minor.
Note: Students must enroll in studio art courses every
semester, beginning in the freshman year or expect a delay in
completing graduation requirements. Students must not postpone
electing studio art courses until their General Education Requirements
are met, but instead spread these required courses over a four-year
period.

The student is admitted to student teaching in the visual arts
through a second application process which includes a portfolio
review and completion of the following criteria:
Post-baccalaureate students with a degree in art may meet competencies
for K-12 art certification following the same program worksheets.
They should apply through the Coordinator for Art Education when
they are admitted to the University.
