The Department of Art offers a diverse and comprehensive program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional degree, and a Bachelor of Arts, a liberal arts degree in art. The curriculum provides studio concentrations in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design and illustration, fibers, ceramics, and sculpture, in addition to a minor in art history and teacher certification in art.

Members of the studio faculty are well recognized professional artists, active in their fields of specialization. A diversity of viewpoints and educational training among faculty members encourages students to investigate and appreciate different forms of art expression.

The required study of art history offers a key to understanding the evolution of civilization and the development of human creativity. As a discipline, art history encourages appreciation of individual works of art and instills a vivid awareness of the social and historical context in which these works were produced.

The Art program addresses the needs of students working to become exhibiting artists, art teachers or scholars generally educated in the arts. It also prepares students for a wide range of career choices in art-related professions. The program is structured upon the following premises:

The undergraduate program in Art develops within students the ability to identify artistic problems and to solve them; it leads to an awareness of the interrelatedness of all forms of visual knowledge; and it inspires a creative philosophy unique to each individual bolstered by the critical self-motivation necessary for success.

In addition to meetings required for preregistration, the student may ask the adviser for any art program information. Advising sheets listing all curriculum requirements are available in the Department office.

Teacher Certification. The department offers courses for students seeking to meet the competencies for K-12 art teacher certification and elementary teacher certification. Students planning to specialize in art education should apply through the Coordinator for Art Education during the first semester of the junior year. A later decision to seek certification will result in delayed graduation. Criteria for admission to the art education program are:

  1. Overall G.P.A. of 2.75.
  2. Successful completion of the Praxis I: Professional Skills Test
  3. Completion of EDUC 2100 with a grade of C or better.
The student is admitted to student teaching in the visual arts through a second application process which includes a portfolio review and completion of the following criteria:
  1. Overall GPA of 2.75.
  2. A GPA of 2.75 in education course sequence and area of specialization (art).
  3. Grades of C or above in all courses required for certification.
  4. Recommendation of the Coordinator of Art Education. A student not recommended by the Art Education Coordinator may appeal to the Art Department Chair who will appoint a three-member faculty review committee to interview and evaluate the student. The decision of this committee is final.
Post-baccalaureate students with a degree in art may meet competencies for K-12 art certification following the same program worksheets. They should apply through the Coordinator for Art Education when they are admitted to the University.

Students who complete all the requirements for teacher certification in art will be considered as having a completed second concentration in the B.A. and B.F.A. programs in Art Education.
