TRAN 3271. Introduction to Translating.
(3) Prerequisite: completion through 2202
level of one language other than English, or equivalent. Difference between
translating and interpreting; psychological differences among speakers of
different languages; patterns of language development; non‑verbal
language; levels of language; demonstrations of interpreting; career options;
professional associations and their functions; sources of employment
information. (Fall) (Alternate years)
TRAN 3272. Elementary Translating.
(3) Prerequisites: native fluency in
English and completion through 2202 level of source language, or equivalent.
TRAN 3271 is required for students taking the Certificate sequence, and is
strongly recommended for any others who wish to take TRAN 3272. Comparative
analysis of translated texts; questions of restructuring texts and adding or
subtracting material; style/audience relationship; simple translations from
source language to English; sight translation. (Spring) (Alternate years)
TRAN 3273. Intermediate Translating.
(3) Prerequisite: successful completion of
TRAN 3272. Critical analysis of different kinds of English texts and of texts
translated into English; translations for specific audiences; problems of
terminology; history and theories of translating; development of working
dictionaries in field of specialization; investigation of employment
opportunities. (Fall) (Alternate years)
TRAN 3274. Advanced Translating.
(3) (W) Prerequisite: successful
completion of TRAN 3273. Study of professional journals in
the field of translation; specific problems of source/target language
equivalents; translating of substantial text(s) in field of specialization.
Texts may be scientific, technical, commercial, scholarly or literary,
depending on the student’s field of specialization. (Spring) (Alternate years)
